1 - What movie did you watch?
I watched Legally Blonde. 2 - Who was the main character and what was their objective?
The main character is Elle Woods, and her original objective is to get into Harvard Law to win back her boyfriend, Warner. While at Harvard, her objectives change and she focuses more on proving everyone else that she is smart enough to practice law and use her skills in court. 3 - What obstacles did they have to overcome?
With Elle's initial objective, the biggest obstacle was that Warner was now engaged to a smart, educated woman named Vivian. Each time Elle tried to get near Warner, Vivian was there making snide comments or pulling mean jokes on Elle. Eventually, Elle grew determined to prove that she was just as smart as Vivian was. This lead to her second set of obstacles, in that no one at Harvard believed in her, except for Emmett, her advisor. She had to prove time and time again that she was more than just a "ditsy blonde" and she was just as capable of studying law as everyone else was at Harvard.
4 - What were some of the specific tactics used to overcome the obstacles?
Her first tactic in overcoming the obstacle of Vivian was to "look the part" of a Harvard student. She also would find Warner on campus and try to remind him of the great times they had in their relationship. When Vivian would share out in class, Elle made it a point to present her argument in front of the class to prove that she is capable of learning the material. Her first tactic was very superficial because all Elle cared about at that point was getting Warner back. Her determination to overtake Vivian helped Elle realize that she actually could have a career in law. This led to a new tactic in overcoming the obstacle of Harvard. In an effort to prove herself, she refocused her attention from social gatherings toward her studies. She put in the work, just as her classmates did, and she proved that she was actually learning the concepts of law. When it came time to represent a client in court, she maintained a crucial part of her identity by not revealing her client's alibi to the rest of the law firm, and was still able to win the case without the alibi. Her persistence toward her education, while maintaining her own values, led her to graduate Harvard Law with top honors. 5 - What were 3 supporting characters and their objectives?
One supporting character was Emmett, Elle's advisor and eventual fiance. Emmett was a junior partner at the law firm that Elle was chosen to intern at. Emmett's objectives were to win court cases, appease the head lawyer, Callahan, and to help Elle during her time at the law firm. Another supporting character was Elle's nail technician, Paulette. Paulette's objectives included getting her dog back from an abusive ex-husband, and getting the attention of the UPS man who frequented their nail salon. She was able to do so with Elle's help. Lastly, although there are many supporting characters in the film, Vivian does deserve mention here. Vivian's objective was to marry Warner and to prove herself as a successful female lawyer. She was defensive and rude toward Elle because she was Warner's new fiance and did not want the ex-girlfriend hanging around. Later in the film, when Callahan tries to seduce Elle, we learn that Vivian felt Elle was getting preferential treatment because of her looks. At the end of the film, Vivian simply wanted to graduate with a law degree because she worked hard for it.
1 - What movie did you watch? I watched Uncle Buck. One of my all-time favorite movies.
2 - Who was the main character and what was their objective? The main character was Buck, and his objective was to take care of his brother’s children while his brother and sister-in-law had to go out of town to care for her sick father. However, he also craves a connection with his brother and his family, which is not there due to obstacles.
3 - What obstacles did they have to overcome? Being unemployed, not married, child-like, and absent from his nieces and nephew’s lives, he had to fight to connect and earn the respect of the oldest niece, Tia. Buck also must grow up/get a job, if he wants to keep his girlfriend, who he does love, Chanice. Growing up/acting more mature/getting a job, is the same obstacle to earn the respect of his brother.
4 - What were some of the specific tactics used to overcome the obstacles? Buck tried to be friendly with her, but that didn’t work as Tia was still upset about having to move away from her old home/school/mom’s family. Buck then embarrasses her to try to get her to behave, and also a bit of retaliation. Then he tried to protect her by going to a party to scare her bad-boy boyfriend. He finally tries to understand her, and they have a real conversation and open up to each other.
Buck tries to teach the younger kids how to cook and clean and learns that you can have fun being responsible. He also realizes how much he loves his girlfriend and tries to more mature and responsible to keep her in his life by accepting her job offer and opening up to her about how much he loves and needs her. This learned maturity also helps with his brother and sister-in-law, which will bring Buck closer to his family, finally connecting in a meaningful way.
5 - What were 3 supporting characters and their objectives? Cindy’s, Buck’s sister-in-law, need to get to her sick father immediately but her obstacle is needing to find a responsible person to take care of their children. Chanice, Buck’s girlfriend, wants Buck to get a job and settle down with her, but her obstacle is Buck’s immaturity. Mazy, the youngest niece, wants to have fun and be silly and loved, her obstacle is a mean Principal at her school.
I watched the movie Salt, starring Angelina Jolie. She is a Russian spy working for the CIA. I would not say it is my favorite movie, but it is a movie with lots of twists and turns.
Evelyn Salt was trained as a child to be a Russian spy. She has spent years perfecting her life and hiding her background. When her mentor shows up, the movie gives the impression she turns back to her original training and is ready to fulfill the goal of her Russian trainers. We think her objective is to kill the Russian President.
As we move through the movie, there are many physical obstacles to overcome as there is a whole cast of “good” guys whose job it is to protect the very one Salt is intent on getting to. It is a movie, so we understand getting beat up, running down the middle of the road, and running a police vehicle off an overpass (and walking away) are not realistic. On the other hand, we must think about the mental and physical stamina involved to even be able to think through solutions in these situations.
Then we come to the part where Salt meets up with her Russian counterparts. The obstacle here is seeing her husband and then watching him be assassinated. She had to maintain absolute control over her emotions to prove she was still on board with their plan. To me, this mental front would be significantly more difficult than the physical obstacles. Any crack in her emotions would have meant her death and she knew that. She was able to maintain that control, but it is obviously with great difficulty. At this time, we understand that she has shifted her loyalty and plans to work against the Russians.
Throughout the movie, Salt must rely on her training (both physical and mental) to control her thoughts and plan her next steps. She is always thinking ahead two steps. It is that ability to think and react quickly that makes the movie a success.
Supporting characters include “Ted Winter” who we think is a friend until the end and he turns out to be at the center source of the plot. His objective is to frame Salt for the entire plan and make himself look like the hero. Also “Darryl Peabody” who we see throughout the film as intent on arresting Salt but allows her to escape in the end. They both put obstacles in front of Salt, but for different reasons.
